The citator
Before your AI cites a case, Passim tells it what has happened to that case since it was decided: the later decisions that affirmed, limited, vacated, overruled, or reinstated it, quoted from the citing decision. Treatment is recorded for the precedents of the Board, the Attorney General, the circuit courts, and the Supreme Court, from 151,564 citation links between decisions. Every status your AI shows comes from this list.
- CautionAdverse treatment is on record. Read it before relying on the case.
- NegativeA later authority limits, criticizes, or declines to follow it.
- Overruled / vacatedA later authority ended it, in whole or on a specific holding.
- ReinstatedA later authority restored it, as happened with Matter of A-B- in 2025.
- Treatment availableThere is history to read.
- UncheckedNo treatment has been recorded yet.
A status is a starting point rather than a substitute for reading the decision, and the absence of a warning doesn’t establish that a case is good law. Where a case has been treated differently on different holdings, the answer says which holding the treatment reaches.
How the library is kept
